Planning of the routes started in November 2010, with a bit of research. We started by working out what gaps we had available in our schedules, and how many days we could afford to spend on the road. We came up with the following plan:
East to West in 5 days, starting on Saturday 28th May in Lowestoft, and finishing on Wednesday 1st June at St David's, Wales.
Land's End to John 'O Groats in 11 days, starting on Thursday 7th July, and finishing on Sunday 17th July
There are a wealth of LEJOG articles on the internet, suggesting different routes. A number of these proved very useful in getting a basic idea of the challenge that was in store for us. We also got hold of the very informative packs available from CTC, and used their 'fast' route, with some minor deviations to come up with a route. It is not the shortest, or the quickest route. We are hoping it is a compromise between our need to do the ride relatively quickly, but also have some fun along the way and see some of our beautiful country.
The east -west route was much harder to come to terms with. There are very few guides on the internet, and we have had to use our own knowledge and a bit of help from friends and family, to come up with something that should serve us reasonably well. We have a couple of alternatives to some of the days, giving us the option of taking the more scenic and hilly routes, should the need take us
we have used the planning software at www.ridewithgps.com to plan all of our routes, exported them as .gpx files, and then uploaded into a Garmin 800 Bike computer. Hopefully, this will help us to stay on track for most of the ride!
